Cover Date: February 1989
Subtitle: Skells
Writer(s): Dennis O'Neil
Artists(s): Denys Cowan, Malcolm Jones III
Storyline: Fermin shot his wife again, then killed a reporter who tried to stop him. Myra was not expected to recover, the reporter was killed, and Fermin escaped in the chaos. Vic felt responsible for the death of the reporter, as he'd called in sick to the assignment.
The Question went out in search of the still at large Fermin. He showed himself at a hostage situation in the city (riots had broken out due to all the violence). He went in shooting. The kidnappers were killed, as was Fermin.

The Question #26

Cover Date: March 1989
Subtitle: Riddles
Writer(s): Dennis O'Neil
Artists(s): Bill Wray, Malcolm Jones III, Dom Carola
Storyline: Riddler was let loose from jail by Commissioner Gordon. He advised him to give up crime and go back to his original name, Edward Nashton. He hopped a bus out of town and met a former stripper who wanted to rip off everyone on the bus then kill them.
The Question took down some small time criminals and headed home. He aggravated his gunshot wound and fainted. When he woke up, he was riding in the car with Tot, who was taking him to a cabin for some rest. The car ran out of gas and they hailed an oncoming bus for a ride. The same bus.
After she killed two, the Question took down the woman. She ran and fell into an icy river.

The Question #27

Cover Date: June 1989
Subtitle: Captain Stars & Sergeant Stripes
Writer(s): Dennis O'Neil
Artists(s): Denys Cowan, Malcolm Jones III
Storyline: Tot told him his cousin, Alvin, would be coming for a visit. Alvin used to write and draw comic books during the WWII times. He'd disappeared years ago.
Vic visited Myra, who was still in a coma. The Question then went out for a patrol. He stopped a mugging and took down some men who'd dropped another man off a rooftop.
Alvin told Tot how he'd won the war - by doing comics. After leaving the States, he fell in with a group of pygmies. Each day, before the hunt, their Shaman would draw an animal and one of their warriors would shoot it. Each time, the tribe would bring home the same animal killed in the same spot. Due to this, Alvin believed his comics, which depicted Americans defeating the Germans and Japanese, helped win the war.
Charlie had him draw a picture of Myra waking up.

The Question #28

Cover Date: July 1989
Subtitle: A Place for the Arts
Writer(s): Dennis O'Neil
Artists(s): Denys Cowan, Malcolm Jones III
Storyline: Lady Shiva returned to Hub City. She took down several gangbangers (Huns) and ordered the survivor to have their leader contact her.
One of the leaders of the Ghosts gang took control of a television broadcast to offer "protection" to the citizens of Hub City, for the low price of 60% of their income.
Vic picked up Myra from the hospital - they were out of medicine (stolen or never arrived) and nurses were refusing to come to work. She wanted to meet the leaders of the two strongest gangs.
The Question grabbed Loosh, the Hun leader, and drug him toward Myra, but they were met by Shiva, who'd taken down another group of Huns who were sent to kill her.

The Question #29

Cover Date: August 1989
Subtitle: The Slaying
Writer(s): Dennis O'Neil
Artists(s): Denys Cowan, Malcolm Jones III
Storyline: Shiva and the Question fought until the gang decided to kill them both. She took down the grunts while the Question continued on with their leader. He delivered him to the Mayor.
Vic Sage then brought in the other gang leader by appealing to his acting aspirations. Myra gave them the option of becoming the law enforcement of the city - one gang ruling the north, the other the south. She and Vic took a walk while the leaders discussed it.
When they returned, one lay dying in the floor. They grabbed him up and headed to the hospital, but were surrounded by other gangbangers.

The Question #30

Cover Date: September 1989
Subtitle: Whodunit?
Writer(s): Dennis O'Neil
Artists(s): Denys Cowan, Malcolm Jones III
Storyline: Vic and his crew convinced the gang (after a scuffle) that they were trying to get their leader to the hospital. Once there, he was told to bring the rival leader in or they'd kill the mayor.
Shiva leant a hand in bringing him in, though neither believed he was the stabber. After getting back to the hospital, they convinced the gang that their leader had gotten up and fled. He was buried in an unmarked grave. Vic confronted the real killer - the man who owned the pizza place where the meeting was held.

notes

  • The trade paperback uses the same cover as issue 27.
  • Riddler's bus meets Vic and Tot's car, which is traveling to New Hampshire, placing Hub City near both Gotham City and New Hampshire. (issue 26) The problem with this is KBEL - call letters beginning with "K" tend to be west of the Mississippi River.
  • "You mean how long has it bean since you beat me to a soggy mess? Three years, give or take a few weeks." (The Question to Shiva, issue 29)
